Privacy
Issues: Your computers may contain trade
secrets, confidential customer information or other sensitive
data. In the wrong hands this sensitive information could
cost you thousands / millions in lawsuits, lost business
and other privacy risks.
Environmental
Risk: The EPA has classified electronic
equipment as hazardous waste. Improper disposal of computers,
peripherals and other electronic waste can incur significant
fines and penalties.
Software
Liability: There are specific requirements
for transferring the proprietary software on your computers.
Software left on computers you dispose of could incur
significant fines if not transferred properly. In addition,
you may have created your own software programs, which
you do not want in the hands of competitors or others.
Other
Risks: Many other risks lurk just around
the corner. Perhaps the next most significant risks
might be (a) the hidden costs of managing your own asset
disposal when this is not your fulltime business, (b)
working with a disposal company who tells you disposing
of computers is "free" and (c) timing or obsolescence.
